More than 200 residents from the Tualauta district in American Samoa have signed a petition objecting to a proposal to have an asphalt plant, due to health concerns.
Several board members of the Project Notification Review System Board told KHJ News that they are reviewing carefully a proposal by Paramount Builders to build the plant in Tafuna.
The proposed plant, which would be located near the Veteran Memorial Stadium and several schools, would supply asphalt for the airport road project.
The main concern raised by several residents during the PNRS hearing last week is the location, where they say emissions from the plant including toxic chemicals will be unsafe for residents who live nearby.
The concerns are similar to those raised by residents when McConnell Dowell operated their plant at that same site, but was later removed due to public and health concerns.
