Cook Islands Govt praises top NGOs for work

10:26 am on 24 July 2013

The Finance Minister of the Cook Islands has praised the Red Cross and the Sports and National Olympic Committee for working closely with the Government.

Mark Brown says it's crucial for Pacific governments to communicate and partner with other organisations that can readily help citizens at times of natural disasters.

He says governments can do more to provide centralised channels for aid funds to be donated to countries that suffer effects of disasters and climate change.

He says the proactive approach of the Red Cross is a good model to follow.

"Currently they are excellent. The work that I am aware of in the Red Cross in terms of disaster preparedness is the emergency containers that are in our various communities, available as soon as disaster strikes."

The Finance Minister of the Cook Islands Mark Brown says the community appreciates taking ownership of the disaster containers.
