Indigenous group against improved status for CNMI alien workers

3:05 pm on 23 July 2013

A group representing the interests of the indigenous people of the Northern Marianas is opposed to a CNMI-specific provision in the recently passed US Senate Immigration Reform Bill, that provides improved status for alien workers.

The Northern Marianas Descent Corporation says a section of the legislation provides a pathway to citizenship to long-term, legal foreign workers.

The president, Ana Sablan Teregeyo, says it will alter and disrupt the social, political and economic livelihood and aspirations of the indigenous peoples.

The group, which formed in March, claims to represent at least 7,500 individuals of Northern Marianas descent.
