Full scale public sector strike looms in Solomons

9:18 pm on 23 July 2013

A full scale public sector strike is on the cards in Solomon Islands as a nationwide strike by teachers continues.

Teachers across the country have been on strike for the past week and a half, the third time since the start of the year, and are now threatening a mass resignation unless the government pays outstanding wage commitments.

Annell Husband reports from Honiara.

"The Solomon Islands National Teachers Association, or SINTA, is to meet with the Council of Trade Unions on Wednesday to discuss how to proceed. SINTA's industrial relations officer, Samson Faisi, says a government threat to cut salaries on Thursday unless teachers go back to work is seen as empty. But he says teachers have voted to stage a resignation en masse if the government carries out its pledge, and their resolve will not be shaken. Mr Faisi says such action is a last resort but the strike will continue until the government pays teachers the money it owes them."
