Sport: New Samoa 7s coach on hunt for new talent

The newly appointed Samoa sevens coach Viliamu Punivalu says there will be a number of changes to the national team as he rebuilds an ageing squad.

Punivalu was chosen from a list of 18 applicants and replaces Faamaoni Lalomilo, who was sacked after Samoa finished fourth in the latest IRB World Series.

Punivalu's first task is the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna in September.

The recent National Under 20s coach says he wants to identify eight new players who have never played on the World Series circuit and is excited about the new gig.

"I've always been very passionate to coach sevens. That started from 2011 when I was the head coach for Vaiala, our club team. We were very successful - in that year we were undefeated all throughout the tournaments here in Samoa - and that drived a passion within me to try and coach at international level."

Viliamu Punivalu says he has a good idea of what talent is around and is looking at players from Samoa, Australia and New Zealand.
