Samoa's fire commissioner sacked

1:36 pm on 22 July 2013

Samoa's first appointed Commissioner of Fire and Rescue Authority, Seve Tony Hills, has been dismissed following a cabinet decision.

This follows an Ombudsman's investigation into alleged abuse of power.

Staff members had raised grievances with the minister concerning Seve's alleged conflict of interest and corruption.

The chairman of the Fire and Rescue authority board, Leta'a Daniel Devoe, says the cabinet decision was delivered to the board on Wednesday with advice to look for a new commissioner immediately.

He says the board has also been told of criminal charges laid by the police against the former commissioner but he did not reveal the nature of the charges.
