Nauru sacks Australian police commissioner after riot

4:59 am on 22 July 2013

The acting President of Nauru has sacked his Australian police commissioner after a riot that caused $60 million dollars in damage to the detention centre and put six in hospital.

More than 100 refugees remained in jail overnight as a result of the violence.

Some workers from the centre have been removed due to security concerns and while the facility is rebuilt.

The riot comes in the wake of Australia's recent announcement of its new immigration policy not to process any refugees taken to Nauru or Manus Island.

Refugee advocates have warned that the situation on Manus Island is also volatile and will be increasingly so when more asylum seekers arrive.

837 asylum seekers have arrived in Australian waters in the past week alone, bringing this year's total to more than 15,000.

Australian Immigration Minister Tony Burke has admitted the facilities on Manus Island are not at the required standard for children.
