Solomons PM faces defamation lawsuit

The Solomon Islands Prime Minister Gordon Darcy Lilo is being sued for defamation by the general manager of Russell Islands Plantation Estates Limited or RIPEL.

According to the documents filed in the High Court, John Whiteside claims comments the Prime Minister made to the media about him, and reports the Island Sun and four of its journalists published recently, have defamed his character.

Mr Whiteside, who is a Fiji citizen, filed the law suit on Tuesday, after attempts by the government to deport him early last month failed.

The court papers reveal Mr Whiteside claims he was abducted from his Heritage Park Hotel apartment by police and an immigration officer without due authority and held in custody for deportation on the 9th of June but was released that evening.

Mr Whiteside says the immigration officer told him he and the police were acting on the direct orders of the Prime Minister.
