Vanuatu confirms discussions with Honiara over Vetagde claims

A Vanuatu Foreign Affairs official has confirmed that the northernmost island within the country's official boundaries, Vetagde, is still the subject of a claim by the Solomon Islands.

Radio Vanuatu reports the acting Director-General of Foreign Affairs, Yvon Basil, as saying that claims by both countries to the tiny island in the Torres Group have recently been discussed in the Melanesian Spearhead Group.

He says both countries agree the issue will be solved in what he call a Melanesian way.

This comes as a group of men from Torba province's capital, Sola, this month travelled to the uninhabited Torres Group outlier and raised the Vanuatu flag on Vetagde.
