PNG's PM orders police squad out of Manus camp following death

9:55 am on 17 July 2013

Papua New Guinea's Prime Minister Peter O'Neill has ordered the withdrawal of a police mobile squad unit sent to Manus Island to assist local police maintain law and order outside the Manus Asylum Seeker Processing centre.

This follows the death of a young man in Manus over the weekend allegedly caused by members of the police squad.

Mr O'Neill says an arrest has been made and the policeman has been charged and locked up.

In his capacity as Police Minister, he says he has instructed the Police Commissioner to replace the concerned police mobile unit and discipline those involved in incidents of misconduct as reported by the Manus community.

He said this when responding to Manus MP Ronney Knight during Question Time in parliament on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister says reports of misconduct by such police units have become far too frequent and the community has lost trust in PNG's discipline forces.
