Two Papua New Guinea soldiers have been arrested in relation to an armed rampage against university students at the weekend.

The police say more than 30 soldiers armed with guns, knives and iron bars carried out the attack at Port Moresby General Hospital and the adjacent Medical and Health Science campus of the University of PNG on Sunday, injuring staff, security personnel and students.

A police spokesperson, Superintendent Dominic Kakas, says the two men were arrested with assitance from the defence force.

"The investigation is continuing. They're still being interviewed and when that ends we'll be in a better position to actually determine the charges they'll be charged with."

Dominic Kakas says police anticipate more arrests will be made today.

A male dental student is in a stable condition in hospital after being seriously assaulted during the attack.
