PNG students and staff protest after military attack

7:28 pm on 15 July 2013

Staff and students from the University of Papua New Guinea are protesting for justice against a group of soldiers who staged a rampage on them.

The University's Student Representative Council says dozens of soldiers armed with guns, knives and iron rods assaulted students, staff and security officials from the Medical and Health Sciences campus in Taurama on Sunday.

The Vice President of the Student Council, Nou Vada says staff and students are trying to find out who the perpetrators are and what the defence force will do about the attack.

He says students from the Medical and Health Sciences Faculty have given the government and the military a 12 hour ultimatum to address the issue.

"This is not the first time members of the defence force have gone on a rampage using defence firearms and vehicles to terrorise civilians. And we're hoping this is going to be the last. The view down here is enough is enough. We can't live in fear of these people who are supposed to be our sworn protectors."

Nou Vada says students from the main campus in Waigani may join the protest.

The acting Police Commissioner, Simon Kauba, has condemned the attack and says he will ensure that it is thoroughly investigated.
