Nauru police review motor traffic act to give police more powers

7:52 am on 10 July 2013

Nauru's police chief, Richard Britten, says the country's Motor Traffic Act is under review to give police more powers to act against drunk drivers.

He says already this year there have been four deaths on the island's few roads - the same as for all of last year.

Mr Britten says the deaths were avoidable and in most cases alcohol was involved.

He says a harder stance on intoxicated drivers is the only way to deal with people who are not interested in looking after themselves or other road users.
