Sport: Funding reinstated for sports in American Samoa

The director of American Samoa's Department of Education, Vaitinasa Dr Salu Hunkin-Finau has confirmed funding for sports program is being reinstated following approval by the Governor's Office for an increase in the department's budget ceiling for the new school year.

Faced with a 10 percent across the board cut for all government departments and agencies ordered by the governor, and the 5 percent cost reduction in certain federal grants, Vaitinasa last month reduced the sports program budget from 170,000 US dollars to 30,000 US dollars for the new school year.

Vaitinasa says over the weekend that the governor's office approved the department's request of a 1.6 million dollar increase in the budget for the new school year which begins next month.

She says the approval came with a specific request to restore the sports program and she is happy to do so with an added precaution that sports and all other extracurricular activities are secondary to the department's primary mission, which is academic achievement.
