The secretary of justice in Nauru, Lionel Aingimea says he expects to soon make decisions on the refugee status of some of the first asylum seekers on the island.
Mr Aingimea says the assessments involving interviews with the asylum seekers and then verifying this information have been completed for a number of the 521 people now being held in the Australian run camp on Nauru.
He says he should receive these reports next week and decisions on their refugee status, which ultimately rest with him, should come within days.
"Interviews have been completed. The research to determine their bona fides - not all of them but some of certainly the first arrivees, and they should be coming to my desk in the coming week so that we can start determining those than can be declared genuine refugees."
