A new council has been launched to look at the welfare of senior citizens in Fiji.

The National Council for Older Persons was launched this morning by the Social Welfare Minister, Dr Jiko Luveni in Suva.

FBC News reports Dr Luveni saying the need for special policy attention for older age groups is a consequence of the unprecedented global phenomenon of population growth.

He says the policy is a direct outcome of the Prime Ministers wish to help senior citizens.

The council is now the implementing agency for activating the recommendation of the National Ageing Policy and is made up of government officials and civil society representatives.
