Captain Nalin Nipiko put in an all-round display to guide Vanuatu to a 35 run victory over Fiji in their opening match at the East Asia Pacific Under 19 cricket tournament on the Sunshine Coast.
It was a belated beginning, after their match against Samoa was washed out on Monday.
Nipiko raced through to 32 from just 39 deliveries but his dismissal triggered a collapse as Vanuatu lost their last six wickets for just seven runs to be all out for 89.
The 17 year old skipper then ripped through the Fijian batting order with the new ball, taking 5 for 12 to reduce the Young Blues to 21 for 8.
Their was brief resistance from lower order batsmen Josaia Baleicikoibia, who was the only Fijian to reach double figures, before Callum Blake snared the final wicket with his first and only delivery of the match, as Fiji were dismissed for 54.
Fiji coach Joe Rika was again left to lament what could have been.
"I think we could have won this match. We lost by 36 runs, we lost six wickets too early - six wickets that 36 runs would have been peanuts - but it's what's happened and we can only move forward from here."
