A former high-ranking New Zealand police officer, who was sentenced to 12 months in prison in the Cook Islands for drugs crimes, wants to appeal against his sentence.
He was sentenced last week after admitting charges of selling cannabis and possessing cannabis for sale.
Franklin's lawyer says as a veteran of law enforcement Franklin had dealt with some of the most gruesome offending in New Zealand.
He says one cannot help that after 27 years of seeing what he saw, some compassion must be held.
The court had also heard that Franklin had been diagnosed with throat cancer in October 2011.
Franklin was one of 13 individuals netted in the landmark Operation Eagle investigation, described as the largest anti-drug police operation in the nation's history.
