Lawmakers in American Samoa on Thursday approved legislation that would cap at 500,000 US dollars, tort claims against the territorial government.

The governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga, who proposed the Bill, says the ceiling cap of all claims is necessary to protect the government's limited financial resources.

Government officials told lawmakers that American Samoa is the only U.S. jurisdiction without a cap on liability claims.

The Attorney General Afoa Moega Lutu, says that the government is still trying to make payments on a 6 million US dollar court judgement handed down a couple of years ago.
