Sport: Fiji Olympic Committee seeks help from Pacific Islands Forum

7:05 am on 5 September 2013

The President of the Fiji Olympic Committee Reg Sanday says it's time for Fiji to be readmitted into the Commonwealth Games.

Fiji has been suspended from the Commonwealth since 2009, with the Commonwealth Games Federation subsequently banning Fiji from the 2010 Delhi Games.

The next Commonwealth games will be in Glasgow in just over ten months, and Reg Sanday says he's written to the Secretary General of the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat, Tuiloma Neroni Slade.

"Just outlining the position of sport and politics and the international principles that require separation of the sport from politics - suggesting perhaps that, as an unintended consequence of the Forum position towards Fiji, our sporting folk have suffered by not being able to participate in the Commonwealth Games, yet we've been able to participate in the Olympic Games and other Games."
