Call for transparency around Solomons Government trips

4:18 am on 5 September 2013

A Solomon Islands academic says the government must give the reasons and benefits relating to all overseas trips.

The comment follows the prime minister Gordon Darcy Lilo's justification of his recent visit to Indonesia as a breakthrough moment with benefits that will come in time.

The Centre for Pacific Studies at the University of Hawaii's Tarcisius Tara Kabutaulaka says Mr Lilo's response to public concern about the trip is unprofessional and does not reflect well on someone in his position.

"This is not just about the Indonesia trip. I think there is a need for Solomon Islands government and public servants to sit down and look at our engagements internationally and the expenses of those kinds of engagements and also to calculate the kinds of returns that we get."

Tarcisius Tara Kabutaulaka says Solomon Islands cannot afford to take big delegations overseas.
