Solomons group calls for government to reopen national bank

1:34 pm on 4 September 2013

A Solomon Islands group representing the interests of people from Malaita province says it wants the government to reopen a nationally-owned bank.

The President the Malaita Ma'asina Forum, Charles Dausabea, says many indigenous Solomon Islanders who wish to run a business cannot muster enough finances to get off the ground.

He says they struggle to keep up with Chinese business people, many of whom enter the country with large sums of money and says authorities should take more responsibility.

"This government puts all the money into the bags of members of parliament. So that's where the problem is. If they can set up a... more like revive a development bank for Solomon Islanders to do business, they would have an opportunity to borrow money. You have to borrow money to start business with money. And if you don't have money then sorry it's not on."

Charles Dausabea says the government should also provide incentives to indigenous business people such as tax exemptions.

But some businessmen are skeptical about reviving the Development Bank of Solomon Islands as it had gone bankrupt.
