Sport: Tahiti handed favourites tag for indoor volleyball

9:59 am on 3 September 2013

Tahiti's indoor volleyball teams have been tipped as the ones to beat at the Pacific Mini Games in Wallis and Futuna.

For many countries competing in the Salle Kafika, the Mini Games are an opportunity to introduce new players and develop their squads for the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby.

The Fiji women's coach, Kenny Lidise says only four members of his team were a part of the side at the last Pacific Games two years ago, where Tahiti claimed gold in the women's competition and Wallis and Futuna won the men's.

Lidise is expecting Tahiti to again be setting the standard.

"They're actually the region champs for maybe two or three decades now and they're always a good team. We expect a very very good game - not only with Tahiti but the rest of the teams. If we do win a medal it's a bonus for us because, like I said early on, this is a fairly new side."

The indoor volleyball starts today and runs until next Wednesday.
