American Samoa attorney-general to become senator

5:46 am on 9 September 2013

American Samoa's Attorney General Afoa Moega Lutu has accepted the new post of territorial senator for his constituency, which comprises the villages of Fagatogo, Utulei and Fagaalu.

Samoa News reports that Afoa accepted the senatorial seat following a meeting with traditional leaders.

Afoa, an unsuccessful candidate in last year's gubernatorial race, was the first cabinet director appointment made by the Governor Lolo Matalasi Moliga, who will now need to find a new replacement for the attorney general post.

Afoa takes over the senatorial seat left vacant following the death this year of Mano Fa'agata.

It's unclear as to when Afoa will step down as attorney general.
