UK says Pacific climate change funding to be spent properly

The British Minister of State says the ability of some Pacific island countries to access and apply for financing for climate change adaptation needs to be developed.

Hugo Swire attended the Post Forum Dialogue following this week's Pacific Islands Forum Summit in Majuro where Pacific leaders issued their strongest call yet for action on climate change .

They want an acceleration of efforts to adapt to the impacts of climate change and more effective delivery from aid donors of the support promised to the small island states.

Mr Swire welcomes the call.

"There are huge amounts of money out there, and that money has to be spent properly and accounted for properly. So it can't just be given out here and there. It seems to me the disconnect is the infrastructure within some of the recipient countries being able to handle that and process that and access that."

Hugo Swire says the UK is providing around 6 billion US dollars through its International Climate Fund between 2011 and 2016 to help developing countries adapt to the impacts of climate change.
