PNG happy with assurances from Tony Abbott over Manus

Australia's new prime minister, Tony Abbott, has reassured his PNG counterpart, Peter O'Neill, that the incoming Coalition government is committed to maintaining the asylum seeker detention camp on Manus Island.

The prime minister-elect has spoken with Mr O'Neill about strengthening Australian - PNG relations and ensuring the Manus camp continues.

The Coalition had criticised the arrangement in opposition but said it would salvage what it could from the deal when in government.

The National newspaper says Mr O'Neill was anxious that the processing arrangement - which includes a redirection of Australia's 450 million US aid programme for PNG - continues.

But he told the National he would be happy if Australia wants to review the arrangement.
