Fiji academic says feelings mixed about sanctions easing

The Head of the School of Government, Development and International Affairs at the University of the South Pacific, Professor Vijay Naidu, says people in Fiji have mixed feelings about New Zealand's easing of sanctions.

New Zealand has announced it will formally lift sporting sanctions and reinstate scholarships as a reward for progress towards elections.

Professor Naidu says there is some ambivalence in Fiji about the move given how the new constitution has been brought in.

"At the same time we want the current government to be encouraged to move towards elections and if Australia and New Zealand sanctions are eased these are signals for the government to move in the direction that they are saying they would move."
