Church leaders call for an end to a climate of fear in Fiji

A conference of across-the-spectrum church groups in Fiji has voiced condemnation of Fiji's present system of power.

The World Association of Christian Communication's Pacific Communication Rights for Peace Symposium concluded on Friday in Suva with the release of an outcomes statement calling for an end to what church leaders call a climate of fear in Fiji.

The statement says true democracy in Fiji only exists when the culture of silence has been transformed into a culture of dialogue.

The President of WACC Pacific, Reverend Akuila Yabaki, says churches have agreed to increase efforts to promote dialogue.

"People have a mind to solve problems through speaking and listening to each other and where all people are empowered to speak up and voice their concerns and express ourselves, and we see the responsibility of the churches to help people to speak up and voice their concerns."
