4:22 am on 20 September 2013

France and the Cook Islands have signed an agreement to have French taught in Cook Island schools.

The education cooperation programme, signed this week at the French Embassy in Wellington by France, the New Caledonia government and the Cook Islands Ministry of Education, aims to promote French and raise awareness of cultural diversity in the Pacific.

The agreement will include a French language volunteer spending two years teaching at Nukutere College and Te Uki Ou Primary School.

It is being sponsored by the France-Volontaires Association and Alliance Francais in Rarotonga.
