Vanuatu farmers planting onions

7:10 am on 20 September 2013

Onions are being grown commercially in Vanuatu for the first time.

Farmers at Waluriki in northwest Ambae are the first to start selling their crop at the local markets and in Luganville and Port Vila.

Traditionally Vanuatu has imported onions from Australia.

An agricultural advisor Michael Siba says he is excited about the first harvest because it provides a vegetable that is fresher, cheaper and more plentiful.
