The new Solomon Islands Police Commissioner has been described as well-respected and has considerable experience around the country.
The cabinet has appointed Peter Aoranisaka as the new Police Commissioner, even though he was only third choice behind the Police Service Commission's recommended first choice, the Briton Frank Short.
The last permanent commissioner was also an Englishman, John Lansley, whose contract ended in May.
Mr Aoranisaka comes from Guadalcanal.
Our correspondent, Dorothy Wickham, says the government's desire to see the post held by a local appears to have trumped the Commission's recommendation.
"He holds respect with other ethnic groupings in the police force. I think he's also respected outside of the police force. The choice I think is obvious because of the fact that he is one of the senior ones left in the police force, that he's worked around the country and he's held various postings around the country."
