New contracts for Fiji's top civil servants

10:21 am on 24 September 2013

The Fiji government has put its top civil servants on new contracts with no perks, ending no later than October next year.

Fiji Broadcasting reports all permanent secretaries will lose existing entitlements including housing, entertainment, telecommunications and travel allowances.

The regime leader Commodore Frank Bainimarama earlier defended a near tripling of salaries in some cases as necessary to attract the right people..

The new contracts will end at the latest one month after the proposed elections and FBC reports the positions will be advertised and anyone, including the current permanent secretaries, can apply.

FBC reports the Permanent Secretary for the Public Service, Parmesh Chand, says the new salaries will raise the quality of services delivered to the people.
