The American Samoa Wrestling Association president, Ethan Lake, has been appointed to a newly created government post of Sports Commissioner.

The new position has been in place for more than a month and Mr Lake's new role will see him work in the Department of Youth and Women's Affairs, earning a yearly salary of US$45,000.

The position was only made public last week during Fono budget hearings.

The governor's executive assistant, Lulogologo Joseph Pereira, says the Sports Commissioner is a political appointee charged with the responsibility to advance the governor's vision of developing opportunities for local children through sports.

He says this is one of the governor's initiatives dedicated to help the territory's youth and elevate their status in the new administration's priorities.

Lake will work collaboratively with local government agencies, the National Olympic Commitee, and local church organizations to promote sports locally and at the international level.
