Bills on Constitution and Immigration tabled in American Samoa's Fono

In American Samoa, two bills seeking to change the constitution and immigration laws have been introduced in the Fono.

One measure seeks to extend the duration of Fono sessions from the current 45 days to 60 days per session.

At present, the Fono convenes for two sessions per year for 45 days each.

Because the legislation aims to change the American Samoa Constitution, the governor is requested to subject the proposed amendment to public approval in the next election.

Another bill, which was introduced in the House on Saturday, seeks to reduce the number of immigration board members needed for a quorum.

At present, at least five members of the board are needed to constitute a quorum of the nine-member Immigration board.

However the board is finding it difficult to make decisions on immigration issues because it is unable to get a quorum.
