Fiji Labour Party slams pay increases for permanent secretaries

7:42 am on 25 September 2013

The Fiji Labour Party has slammed the Government's confirmation that permanent secretaries have received massive pay rises.

A leaked report from PriceWaterhouseCoopers outlined new salaries with some earning more than 118,000 US dollars, and increases of up to 192 percent.

The Public Service Commission head, Parmesh Chand, says permanent secretaries will now have to meet strict new performance standards, as required by the new Constitution, and will lose all existing entitlements, including housing, entertainment, telecommunications and travel allowances.

But Labour Party Leader Mahendra Chaudhry says the hikes are out of line with the rest of the department personnel.

"It's shocking, they kept mum about it for more than a week until pressured into admitting it. This pay increase is for a select group, there is no justification for this increase."

Mahendra Chaudhry says the alleged report has not been released, and the reported review should have looked at the whole civil service.
