The Fiji Immigration Department says it has confirmed refugee status for eight foreigners who had sought asylum in Fiji.

A department spokesperson has told Radio Fiji that the eight have met all of Fiji's requirements to be given refugee status.

The report doesn't say where the refugees are from.

The spokesperson says a further seven asylum seekers are being kept at an undisclosed location.

He says they are from Afghanistan and African states affected by civil conflicts.
