Civil society groups in Solomon Islands say a crash involving the new police commissioner was orchestrated in order to discredit him.
The police say an investigation is being conducted into what they describe as a motor collision involving a senior officer on his way home alone in the early hours Saturday week ago but they are not naming Peter Aoraunisaka.
The interim chairperson of the Joint Civil Society Group says witnesses to the incident saw two cars tailing Mr Aoraunisaka's vehicle cause him to swerve and crash.
Barnabas Henson says the crash was designed to tarnish Mr Aorauniska's image, as the prime minister really wants the deputy commissioner Walter Kola in the role.
"He'll probably get interdicted and charged for drunk driving, which sort of disqualifies him automatically from the post. And then we'll be left with Kola and Edmond Sikua."
Barnabas Henson says it would have been politically unpopular to have appointed Walter Kola in the first place.
