American Samoa high school sports to resume

2:41 pm on 1 October 2013

American Samoa's Director of Education says her department has reinstated its partnership with a local group which will provide cultural counselling to students following the recent violence at sports events.

Vaitinasa Dr Salu Hunkin-Finau says high school sports will resume next week after a three-week ban.

The director cancelled all high school sports after a bus carrying a high school sports team was belted with stones following a volleyball game at Fagaitua High School.

Vaitinasa says all sports events will now be held during day time.

She says the Department is also looking at a number of measures to ensure such incidents are not repeated.

"We have reinstated our partnership with TAMs or Toeafua mai matua which is a senior citizens group who have volunteered in the past to assist the high schools especially cultural counselling is what I call it, to help students with problems or helping students in terms of school."
