The Solomon Islands governor general has reportedly referred the matter of the appointment of a new police commissioner back to the prime minister's office.

The Solomon Star reports a spokesperson for the governor general as saying the matter has been referred back to Gordon Darcy Lilo's office because there are constitutional issues around the appointment that must be resolved.

The spokesperson says the matter was referred to Mr Lilo in order for him to seek advice from the attorney general.

Cabinet named Peter Aoraunisaka the new police commissioner almost two weeks ago but he is under investigation for involvement in a traffic accident shortly after his appointment.

Mr Aoraunisaka was reported to be third on the police and prison service commission's list and a former, British, commissioner, Frank Short, was number one.
