Australia urged to clarify Papua policy

2:49 pm on 2 October 2013

The chair of the Vanuatu Free West Papua Association says he believes the recently elected Australian government needs to spell out its position on West Papua to Indonesia.

The new Australian prime minister, Tony Abbott, has been in Indonesia on his first official trip abroad and restated that Canberra has total respect for Indonesia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Mr Abbott has also said he admires what Indonesia has done to improve the autonomy and life of people in West Papua.

But the Vanuatu Free West Papua Association chairperson, Pastor Alan Nafuki, says that kind of statement ignores how the government has violated the human rights of West Papuans for the last decade or so.

"They're just hiding behind the scene but I would like the Australian government to come up front and say right away to the Indonesian Government, that we want a deal, should be agreed upon between the two countries regarding the whole situation with the West Papuan people."

Last week, Australia deported seven Papuan asylum seekers from Queensland to Papua New Guinea.
