Niue registers big climb in tourist numbers

Tourism operators in Niue may be able to access cheap loans to expand their accommodation facilities as the country's push to grow the sector gathers momentum.

The island's tourism co-ordinator Hayden Porter says there is also talk of a seasonal labour scheme to ease any potential worker shortage as more tourists arrive.

The impact of a second flight from Auckland every fortnight during the high season coupled with more promotion of the island has boosted tourist numbers by 34 percent.

Mr Porter says a break-down of this figure shows a significant change in the mix of those arrivals.

"75 percent of visitor arrivals are now here specifically to holiday. If we go back about three years and only about 50 percent of arrivals were specifically here to holiday. So we have had big jumps, and I guess it has been a focussed effort over the past three years, 3 and a half years. Both the New Zealand and Niuean governments really had a big focus on driving tourism forward."
