American Samoa prison escapee arrested

6:16 pm on 9 October 2013

A prison inmate in American Samoa was arrested at a nightclub at the weekend after escaping from the correctional facility.

Joseph Mamona has been charged with escaping from confinement, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest while his girlfriend, who was also arrested, has been charged with aiding and abetting.

Court documents say a security guard at the night club alerted police that Mamona was there with his girlfriend.

The police commissioner William Haleck says Mamona escaped through the roof of his cell.

In July, two men used a hack saw to aid their escape from the jail.
