Australia's immigration minister, Scott Morrison, has visited Canberra's three asylum seeker detention centres on Nauru to restate that none of those held there will be resettled in Australia.
Under a policy, people seeking asylum who arrive in Australia by boat are being sent to Nauru and Papua New Guinea's Manus Island.
Mr Morrison says claims for asylum will be processed under Nauruan law and if a claim has a positive outcome, the asylum seeker will remain on Nauru until a resettlement country other than Australia is nominated.
He says any negative outcome will also see the asylum seeker remain on Nauru until arrangements are made to have that person moved back to their home country.
Mr Morrison says individuals involved in people smuggling will be prosecuted and their Australian visa cancelled, regardless whether they are refugees or not.
