Australia defends handling of Papua protest at its Bali mission

Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has denied that threats were made to three West Papuan activists who scaled the walls of the Australian consulate on the Indonesian island of Bali.

The three men climbed the walls to enter the consulate compound ahead of the APEC summit in Bali to highlight claims of abuse and ill-treatment of West Papuans by Indonesia.

Afterwards, allegations were made that the Australian Consul-General Brett Farmer threatened the three men with arrest by Indonesian security forces.

The charge was denied by Ms Bishop, who said Australian officials acted professionally.

She says she has been advised that no threats were made.
