Stray dogs in Kiribati are to be brought under control.

The Teinainano Urban Council in South Tarawa will pay two US dollars for a puppy or five dollars for an adult dog brought in by owners or members of the public.

A Council clerk, Cekocaake Keariki, says the dogs will be held for 24 hours and if not claimed then they will be euthanised.

Cekocaake Keariki says there is a problem with dogs biting people and the 200,000 US dollar grant from the government will help reduce the number of dangerous strays.
