An auction house in the United States will next month be offering up one of the earliest examples of Oceanic art ever to come to auction.

The rare bird-shaped pestle pommel from the central highlands of Papua New Guinea has an estimated value of between 15,000 and 20,000 US dollars.

The tool believed to have been made more than three thousand years ago was likely to have been used in magic rituals.

Bonhams says the item is an important ritualistic work by early humans.
