The Prime Minister of Tonga has returned home after an extended overseas trip that involved emergency medical treatment.

Matangi Tonga reports Lord Tu'ivakano, who is 61, arrived at Fua'amotu International Airport on Wednesday afternoon on a flight from Auckland.

Lord Tu'ivakano had an emergency heart procedure three weeks ago at a New York hospital, after suffering acute chest pains.

He was in New York to attend the 68th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The Prime Minister left New York a week later and has been in New Zealand for further consultations with a heart specialist.
