NZ students hand over analysis to Tonga Power Limited

The Tongan government aims to have half of its energy from renewable sources by 2020 and four students from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand are helping Tonga's power company to achieve the goal.

The electrical engineering students analysed the system on Tongatapu and will hand over their analysis to Tonga Power Ltd in November.

The project's team leader, Jarrad Raumati, says the group looked at what the system currently does, its reliability, the forecast growth and the monitoring system in place.

"What I've proposed would help them get information on their network without having to have people out in the field. For example the operator at the power station would retrieve event information and they'd be able to make decisions a lot quicker than waiting for a customer to notify them that there's a problem on the electricity network."

Jarrad Raumati says he and another team member hope to travel to Tonga for the hand-over.
