Assault charge against suspended Tongan policeman dismissed

4:34 pm on 21 October 2013

A suspended Tonga police superintendent, Lolesio Hausia, has had a common assault charge against him dismissed.

Matangi Tonga reports magistrate Similoni Tu'akalau discharged Superintendent Hausia after the Crown's two witnesses, including the victim, Viliami Fatafehi, failed to turn up to give evidence at Friday's summary trial.

The hearing had been adjourned previously and the witnesses were brought before the magistrate last Thursday after they were issued a bench warrant and ordered to appear for the trial, but again failed to turn up.

The suspended officer was charged with punching Mr Fatafehi on August the 23rd at 'Anana on Tongatapu.

Superintendent Hausia is suspended and under internal police investigation on an unrelated matter.
