Super Typhoon Lekima is expected to slowly weaken

7:13 am on 24 October 2013

The Guam weather office says Typhoon Lekima is now a super typhoon with winds at its centre of 255 kilometres an hour.

But the storm, which has not yet come close to land, is now moving to the northeast of the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas.

Tropical force winds extend up to 200 kilometres from the typhoon's centre and the storm is now 500 kilometres from the CNMI's largest island, Saipan.

The Guam weather office says Lekima is expected to slowly weaken from today, adding that by tonight it should weaken below super typhoon intensity.
